Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. There’s a surf spot I sneak down to occasionally. On the way to it I walk through a grove of Casuarina’s perched on a cliff. As well as the scenery being spectacular, there is always the anticipation of waves just around the corner.
