Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. There’s something mesmerising about looking at the ocean, and watching the lines of swell march towards the base of the headland I’m sitting on. Branches and leaves cutting across those lines, and some birds effortlessly gliding across the surface. Exquisite.
