Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. These dunes are immense. It seems almost unfeasible that the sand could be blown up to form such massive walls. I wanted to somehow convey the sense of scale, and all the more impressive as the ocean was right behind me. Seems so huge, and yet, flimsy.
