Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. After enough people have walked down a sandy path, and a track gets eaten into the dune, the shadows that fall on its edge are really quite lovely. I’ll always be fascinated by those colours and textures, and of course the open expanse of beach behind.
