Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. This was a little nook at Woolgoolga down south. We were relaxing after a workshop, and I quite liked the way the wave broke on the rock shelf and dropped into the quietness behind it. All this activity which then dissipated very quickly. Sometimes it’s those little moments that give you the most clarity.
