Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. On a trek through the bush along the coast I was taken by the contrast of the cooler shaded area in the foreground, and the sunlit hills in the background. The waves on the other side of the rocks were also in sunlight, it was a lovely juxtaposition.
