Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. Off the corner of this island (when there’s swell) there is a really lovely wave that’s open to the North Pacific, so storms move through really quickly. It’s a wild place, constantly changing, and constantly beautiful.
